This past summer I built a darkroom in my basement apartment. Guess I’ve come a long way since the first post on this blog.
This past week, a series of prints that I developed in that darkroom are now for sale at a local art shop called Iris Arts in Cambridge Ontario. Guess, I’ve really come a long way since the first post on this blog.
It takes about 3 minutes total to see the image on the paper, once you get the enlarger in focus in the darkroom. About 2 seconds once you press the shutter button on your iphone.
The 3 minutes time statement is a lie actually. I took these images 3 years ago, on a old Bronica ETRSI medium format camera that I traded a bunch of thrifted Polaroid camera’s for at Burlington Camera.
So I guess, these photo’s took 3 years to appear on paper.
Speaking of thrift shops. I was at one about 2 years ago and stumble across a box loaded with darkroom equipment. Up until that moment in my life I had never even seen darkroom equipment in real life before. Literally everything except the chemicals and a dark light sealed room was in that box. For $40 (which I actually didn’t have at the time) was all they were asking for about (if sourced all individually) $1000 + worth of gear. So smacked that $40 dollar charge on to my credit card and brought it home, cleaned it all up, and stored it in my dads basement for about 2 years.
One day early 2018 I was taking a pee in a small unfinished bathroom. It had a small window, bunch of two by fours and running water. I thought, after flushing the toilet of course, I could block out that window and make this into a darkroom.
So this summer, I decided to follow through with that, I pulled out the 1000 archived negatives from the past 5 years and decided to find something to print and hang on my wall.
I’m really glad I did that.

First off, sorry for being two days late with this blog. I was busy the last two nights and yeah sure, I probably could’ve written afterwards but I chose to sleep instead. I still haven’t broken my promise, the week isn’t over yet.
Last weekend I got to go out of town with three of the best people I know; Nick, his girlfriend Sarah and her best friend Aliza. After jumping off the stage at the end of his set… Marcel, Lead vocals and guitar of band called Die Hexe , announced to the audience that he thought he broke his ankle.
For the rest of the show, he was be asked probably around 100 times.. if it was broken..
no word yet from the doctor whether or not it is actually broken.. but pretty punk rock regardless of the outcome.

I feel like a Lighthouse would enjoy great weather way more than the rest of us. I mean that if a light house was an actual human of course. Like imagine having to stand on guard every moment of every hour of every day, ready at all times to lead people home?
You don’t get to move, or leave, or take a break. You just have to do your job, all the time with no questions asked.
You are single-handedly responsible for keeping people off the rocks that could lead to them crashing and drowning to their death. What kind of responsibility is that?
I feel like, on good weather days (Days without a potential storm in the middle of the night) that a lighthouse must feel some sort of overwhelming peace. A relaxation that only a factor that is out of our control yet leading toward the side of caution can grant. A peace so freeing that you can’t help but feel alive.
A Lighthouse must love days with a great weather forecast.
If a light house was a human of course…

Today, I turned down a Job opportunity.
I don’t actually have a real job, so that was probably a bad idea.
I turned down 35k a year. ( which is significant in comparison to my 12k a year I’m making now)
I guess, I’m just not into money.
Maybe I’m into funding however.
Money is a tool to help you get other tools, so you can accomplish a goal.
Money is not a net that catches you when everything falls apart.
Money is a mirage.
Maybe life is a mirage too.
Anyways, I said no to an opportunity that was big. However, by doing that I through myself blind into something much, much bigger.

June 30th it rained.
Had my camera and a small tripod, while stopping at my dads house. Glanced and saw some lightning in the distance. Originally, I wanted to take some slow shutter/long exposures of the fireflies that were lazily drifting above the grass. But that idea quickly warped into some sort of lighting shot before the rain hit.
With no bug spray, I decided to embark on the patient, trial and error task that is capturing lighting.
Placing the camera almost on the ground, I originally composed a shot with our front mailbox, and a wind turbine in the back ground, in hopes that the lighting would strike in frame to create a very cool image.
After, missing a handful of lighting strikes with that composition, I decided to switch it up and go for the lighting, as the storm was moving east quite quickly.
While many attempts were made, this was the closest I came to anything spectacular.
